Suffolk Coast and Heaths Areas

The Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) is a protected landscape given special protection in recognition of its distinctiveness and quality. It is one of 49 AONBs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland that together with Heritage Coasts and National Parks contain the finest countryside in Britain.

The Suffolk Coast and Heaths Unit is responsible for the care of the AONB and works closely with a Partnership of 26 organisations, committed to the conservation of this special area. The Unit's main role is to encourage greater awareness of the AONB and deliver a Management Strategy, based on the goals of:

  • Conserving the area's natural beauty and unique character
  • Coordinating the work of the Partnership organisations
  • Strengthening community involvement
  • Encouraging sympathetic sustainable usage for both recreation and commerce

Efforts are being made to make parts of the area more accessible, to improve visitor information and to develop a strategy for sustainable tourism.
